Designers Ideas and Collection

THE ROPE CHAIR
Would you dare to sit on this chair? Have a stack of rope in your home and not quite sure what to use it for? Here is a clever idea from designer Jon Fraser, who came up with a way of creating furniture from 80 meters of rope. Found on HomeTone, the Ropey Chair combines comfort with function and not to mention originality. Can you guess how long it took for Jon to put together this out-of-the-box design? To prove the process is not exactly an easy one, the chair was a one-week job. We really like the outcome and are wondering if you feel the same way.

 THE FACE BOOKSHELF

The Face Shelving comes from Alexi Mccarthy and is a cheerful storage unit for books and various small objects. Paying tribute to simplicity, this unit is truly ingenious. Even though it would look great in a variety of colors, we particularly like the choice of red, which makes things…explosively fun. Enjoy imagining how the face on the wall would look with various book combinations on it and let us know if the designer triggered your appetite for creating something similar.

TABLE FROM WOOD CARVES
Alma (“Soul”) table was created by Brazilian designer Roberta Rampazzo and has a simple, yet original appearance. The acrylic frame holds the scraps together while giving an overall elegant touch to the product. The project developer asserted that this is her way to emphasize on the nobility of wood, even in its most unused shape. The table looks sturdy and can be integrated with ease in various contemporary decors. Bottom line is if you have a bunch of wood scraps at home, you might want to put your imagination to the test and see how you can achieve a practical furniture piece.

CRADLE FOR ADULTS
Why should small children be the only ones enjoying the sweet comfort and peaceful swings of a cradle? This is probably the rhetorical question that triggered the idea of creating a cradle for adults. Richard Clarkson in collaboration with Grace Emmanual, Brodie Campbell, Jeremy Broker, Eamon Moore, Kahlivia Russell and Joya Boerrigter took the idea of some adults always bearing a child side within to another level

Playful Plate to make your meal fun

Playing with food is not only acceptable, but also fun and creative when it comes to modern ceramics design. These awesome Plates by Polish designer Boguslaw Sliwinski… introduce us into a somehow forbidden mealtime tradition – playing with food. Displaying a transportation theme, the ceramic Transportation Plates are a fun way of enjoying a healthy meal. Childish lines shaping different means of transport – by truck, crane, boat, train, helicopter or forklift – adorn six white round plates composing a complete dinnerware set. Simple ceramics in black and white come alive once food is added – exotic fruits or common peas find their place on the transportation surfaces drawn on each plate.

The Five Timeless Chairs

Chair manufacturing brand Emeco presented the new Sezz Collection of seating at Maison & Objet in Paris this January. Designed in collaboration with French designer Christophe Pillet, the chair collection is made of aluminum chairs, stools and swivel chairs and were originally created for the Sezz Hotel in St.Tropez – hence the name. Launched as a five piece collection that display a timeless design, Sezz features two kinds of recycled aluminum shells – with or without upholstery pads. Manufactured at the Emeco factory in Pennsylvania, the chairs and stools tell the story of the Emeco brand, “an interpretation of the Emeco way“, as Pillet describes them. The Sezz Collection by Christophe Pillet for Emeco is described by its designer as follows: “The look is very subtle, but holds an unbelievable quality; you don’t see the welding, the recycled aluminum, the indestructibleness, they are all real but invisible values, the hidden territory of a luxury product.”

The Magnificent Cathedral of Lights

The second edition of the spectacular Ghent Light Festival held in Belgium, for four days (from January 26 to January 29, 2012), displayed quite a few interesting projects. This year’s themes were happiness and music, portrayed in over 30 unique exhibitions. But the focal point of the event is said to have been a giant art installation shaped like a cathedral and made from no less than 55.000 LED lights. According to the official website of the festival, “Belfortstraat (Belfort Street) was the  domain of the Luminarie Cagna. A giant colonnade made of wood and hundreds of thousands of colored lights, with arches that remind one of Romanesque and Renaissance architecture. The entrance area only measured 28 meters high. The audience walked into a fairy tale gallery, surrounded by light and color. Energy Wasted? On the contrary, this immense work of art with 55,000 LED lights consumes only 20Kwatt / h of electricity“. Have a look at the video we found on This is Colossal for more details about the festival and tell us what you think of this art installation.
